Economic sanctions against Iran for its alleged nuclear weapons program were lifted on January 16th. This was the outcome of intensive negotiations between Iran and the P5+1, with Foreign Minister Zarif and Secretary of State Kerry at the forefront.
Majid Takht-Ravanchi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for European and American Affairs, will discuss how this diplomatic breakthrough was achieved despite many obstacles, including domestic opposition within the countries concerned. Occurring against the backdrop of renewed initiatives to resolve the Syria conflict, but also increased tension in the broader region, he will consider the implications of the nuclear deal for international affairs.
PRIO Research Professor Greg Reichbergwill provide a comment on the lessons that can be drawn from this successful conclusion of the nuclear negotiations.
The event will be chaired by the Reverend Dr. Trond Bakkevig.
