This seminar will explore the experiences of Mexico and Norway in the UN Security Council, while also considering the historical legacies of the countries. The discussion will focus on the ability of small states to influence the UN Security Council and identify challenges and opportunities Mexico and Norway faced when advancing various initiatives.
We invite you to join us for a seminar addressing Mexico’s and Norway’s tenure as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the period 2021-2022.
Historically, Mexico and Norway have shared common interests in a number of issue areas in international politics. These shared interests have evolved into a partnership whose initiatives have had concrete impact on multilateral affairs. Most recently both countries coincided for the third time as non-permanent members of the UNSC. Their presence and participation in the organ of the UN that is in charge of international peace and security has also taken place at different historic moments in the evolution of the Council. With this background both Mexico and Norway kept promoting issues such as the rule of law, International Humanitarian Law and institutions, and preventive diplomacy. Furthermore, during their most recent tenure on the Security Council, a central focus has been the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda (WPS).
In the first part of the seminar, distinguished ambassadors Ulises Canchola (Mexico) and Mona Juul (Norway) will explore the experiences of their respective countries in the UNSC, with a view also to the historical legacies of the two countries. More specifically, they will discuss the ability of small states to influence the UNSC and identify challenges and opportunities Mexico and Norway faced when advancing various initiatives.
Following an introductory discussion, the two ambassadors will be joined by PRIO Research Director Louise Olsson and NUPI Research Professor Cedric de Coning in a panel discussion with a particular emphasis on the most recent UNSC period. PRIO Deputy Director and Director of the PRIO Centre on Gender, Peace and Security, Torunn L. Tryggestad, will chair the panel discussion.
