Writing and publications are essential components of the scientific method, and of the dissemination of research to wider audiences. It is likely that academic publishing will be profoundly affected by artificial intelligence, something that will involve both challenges and opportunities.
On one hand many people fear that AI may undermine the operation of journals by making it far easier for unscrupulous authors to submit fake or plagiarized papers, and text written by AI may lack the creativity needed to engage a reader. On the other, AI tools might level the playing field and make it easier for researchers all around the world to get articles published in prestigious English language journals. AI may also dramatically reduce the costs of publishing, and so allow new means to distribute research. These issues and many others will be discussed by the panelists.
