With the decline of the nomadic lifestyle in rural Mongolia and China, urbanisation is an important part of the governmental idea of development. However, in the suburban neighbourhood transitions Katarzyna Golik has studied in China and Mongolia, residents experience a variety of tensions between market forces and bottom-up transformation, informal and formal geographies, and macro- and microeconomic policies and projects.

In this presentation, Katarzyna Golik will offer a glimpse into these post-nomadic regions as arenas of urban innovation that challenge the modernist images of the metropolis envisaged by government agencies.

Discussants are Yun Chen and Tashi Nyima, researchers of development on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.
