Meet the Somalis is a collection of 14 illustrated stories depicting the real life experiences of Somalis in seven cities in Europe: Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Leicester, London, Malmo, and Oslo. ‘Meet the Somalis’ was developed by the Open Society Foundations' At Home in Europe project and is part of a larger research project that will include individual city reports. The ‘Somalis in Oslo’ report, written by PRIO researcher Cindy Horst, will launch 11 December.
Meet the Somalis is based on the testimonies of real Somalis and the illustrations seek to offer readers a better understanding of the experience of fleeing a warzone and the challenges faced by Somalis in Europe. Benjamin Dix (researcher and author) and Lindsay Pollock (artist) created these illustrations based on hours of recorded interviews, photographs, and stories that were sometimes tragic, shocking, hopeful, inspiring, and funny.
