The INTERSECT Research Networkhas opened a call for papers for the third and final INTERSECT workshop 6-7 February, 2020 at the University of Amsterdam.
Background
The Research Network INTERSECT, funded by UACES, was established in 2017 to create a cross-European structure for advancing the knowledge on the many facets of the interplays between technological developments, security practices, and societal changes in Europe. Since its creation it has provided an open forum in which established and early career academics working on related issues meet and develop research ideas while engaging with civil society. INTERSECT’s coordinators are Bruno Oliveira Martins (Peace Research Institute Oslo), André Barrinha (University of Bath), Marieke de Goede (University of Amsterdam), Mireille Hildebrandt (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and Karen Lund Pedersen (University of Copenhagen).
The 2020 INTERSECT workshop in Amsterdam
The third and final INTERSECT workshop will address the topic The Future of EU Security: issues, concepts and approaches. The event will be held at the University of Amsterdam in 6-7 February 2020. The workshop will be organised in cooperation with the FOLLOW project, the University of Amsterdam Center for European Studies (ACES), and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam’s Interdisciplinary Centre for European Studies (VICES) and its main objective is to advance on a future research agenda for EU security that will unfold within the triangle of INTERSECT, i.e. within the mutual influences between technology developments, security practices, and societal change. The secondary objective is to foster dialogue between researchers, practitioners, students, and the general public.
The workshop welcomes theoretical reflections and empirical studies on the developments in three topics:
- artificial intelligence and predictive analytics in security and war
- financial security and the shrinking civil society space
- Interplays between communities of research and practice in EU security
This call for papers is open to PhD students and early career academics. We invite submissions addressing one of these three themes. Submissions should include a 300-word abstract as a well as a short bio of the paper author(s). The submissions should be sent to Bruno Oliveira Martins (brumar@prio.org).
A small travel stipend will be available for PhD candidates that need travel support.
The deadline for submissions is 10 December 2019.
