Director's Outlook for 2025
As we enter 2025, the world stands at a critical juncture. The unexpected collapse of the Syrian regime, ongoing wars in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine, and events such as the attempted coup in South Korea remind us of the fragility of peace. Meanwhile, the upcoming U.S. presidential transition brings new uncertainties to the global political order. This turbulent landscape highlights the urgent need for knowledge, dialogue and action - foundations of PRIO’s work.
In 2025, PRIO’s research will tackle today’s most pressing challenges. With the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, we examine its potential as both a tool for peace and a driver of inequality and conflict, ensuring global governance keeps pace with technological change. In the face of protracted conflicts, PRIO’s work on migration sheds light on the realities of displaced communities and the policies that shape their futures.
This year also marks 20 years since UN Resolution 1325, a landmark in recognizing women’s role in peacebuilding. Through our Gender, Peace and Security Centre, PRIO remains committed to advancing research that will strengthen women’s roles in preventing and resolving conflicts.
In these uncertain times, PRIO’s commitment to understanding conflict and building pathways to peace has never been more vital. Let us move forward, grounded in knowledge and hope.
Sincerely,
Henrik Urdal,
PRIO Director
