After completing my Master Thesis I worked for 3 months as research assistant for Astri Suhrke at the Chr. Michelsens Institute in Bergen, in the autumn of 1992.

In January 1993 I started to work on my doctoral thesis on "The Muslim minority of Greek Thrace" at the University of Bergen, Department of History, where I have been a Research Associate since this time. At the University of Bergen I have also been associated with the Centre for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies and the International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER) programme. In this connection I organised recently the series of lectures at IMER in spring 2001.

In the academic year 1994–95 I held a Fulbright scholarship and spent 10 months at the University of Princeton. While working on the thesis I spent 2 months in Munich during the autumn of 1995, using the research facilities at the Südostinstitut and the University of Munich.
I also visited the University of Utrecht and the library of Leiden for shorter periods.

In 1997 I participated in a research project on minority education led by Anna Frangudaki of the University of Athens. In 2000 participated in a project on Balkan refugees in historical perspective organised by Vasilis Gunaris who is director of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle in Thessaloniki. I have at times been consultant to both the Norwegian and Danish Helsinki Committee on questions related to minorities in the Balkans.
