The long-term objective of this project is to increase analytical capacity in Norway in relation to developments in the Caribbean and Central America. The project is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In 1999, the project devoted special attention to developments in Guatemala after the signing of the peace accords and to the continuing conflict between the USA and Cuba. The working approach combined analytical research with the development of networks through individual contacts, visits and conferences – including a two-month research visit to Cuba. As a result, good academic contacts have been made in both Cuba and the USA as a basis for further development of the project.
