Recent studies of civil war conclude that vertical inequality (inequality between individuals) does not increase the risk of internal armed conflict. This thesis examines whether countries with severe horizontal inequality (structural inequality between ethnic groups) are more prone to internal armed conflict. By comparing subnational groups in 34 contries, it investigates the violence potential in both social and economic horizontal inequality.
Supervisors: Tanja Ellingsen, NTNU; Nils Petter Gleditsch, PRIO. The thesis was completed in August 2003 and defended in September 2003.
