This project analyses the central factors that have influenced regime type and regime stability in the Middle East through a review of regional developments from World War I until the present time.
The aim of the project is threefold:
To identify central variables that have had an impact on regime type, regional development and regime stability.
To analyse the relations between the most important variables on the international, regional and national levels.
To reveal the interests and strategies of the most important regional and international actors concerning regime type and regime stability.
The role of these variables and the relations between them are illustrated through analysis of particular historical events, with a focus on the consequences of the policies of the USA and the European powers towards the region. The establishment of the state system in the Middle East after World War I, the creation of Israel in 1948 and the US-led interventions in Iraq since 1990 are the main events included in the analysis.
