The use of commercial contracting by continental European states in international settings is more often than not considered marginal. This project, developed in collaboration with the Department of Business and Politics at the Copenhagen Business School, questions the accuracy of this picture. It looks at the traditions of contracting Private Military and Security Companies (PMSCs) in nine European states (Scandinavian, continental and East European), at how this tradition is shaping present day contracting practices and how contracting in turn shapes international engagements. The project discusses the general insights on this topic with specific reference to the role of contracting by European states in shaping peace and reconciliation strategies in Afghanistan.
