Security is the most contentious issue that needs to be addressed in the negotiations for a solution of the Cyprus problem. Also, this is one area that involves issues that cannot be fully tackled within the framework of inter-communal negotiations alone. Specifically, these issues relate to the security aspects of the 1960 Accords between the Republic of Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom, which form the constitutional basis of the Republic of Cyprus. These issues are of great geopolitical significance not only at the local level of Greek Cypriot-Turkish Cypriot relations but also within a much wider international context, including but not restricted to Greece, Turkey and the UK. Ever since its inception the security regime created by the 1960 Accords has been a fundamental point of difference between the two Cypriot sides. The Greek Cypriot side demands its abolition or at least its substantial modification, while the he Turkish Cypriot side is adamant that it should continue largely as it is. Needless to say, in this the two communities are fully supported by their respective "motherlands", that is Greece and Turkey.
