The PRIO GPS Centre has been commissioned by NORAD to carry out a survey on the attitudes towards the role of women in Ukraine society. The project is led by Senior Researcher Eric Skoog.
GPS Centre Team will carry out a study, collecting survey data from a sample of 1000-1200 individuals in Ukraine. The survey will be based on previous PRIO surveys conducted in Ukraine, allowing comparisons over time. In this new survey, however, additional questions will be included focusing on attitudes towards the role of women in various sectors of Ukrainian society today, as well as in the reconstruction efforts once the war ends. The previous rounds measured not only individual level experiences of conflict, but also included some general measures of social trust and values. The new survey will include a set of measures to capture attitudes towards gender equality and women’s role in the rebuilding of society, including participation in civil society organizations. Additionally, measures will be included that capture experiences of female participation in civil or military roles during the conflict. This will allow an investigation of attitudes towards women taking an active role in these functions during the extraordinary circumstances of war, and how this also impacts attitudes to the role of women in society in the long run. In particular, the survey will not only provide us with an overview of the attitudes prevalent in Ukrainian society at large, but also allow us to evaluate how both the overarching conflict context, as well as individual experiences, impact these attitudes. This can be of substantial value for evaluating the potential impact and design of both current and future interventions to empower women and foster gender equality in post-war Ukraine.
