Article 9 of the Japanese 1946 Constitution, with its renouncement of war and the use of force, gave Japan a pioneering role in East Asia's gradual transition from widespread warfare to regional peace. When Article 9 is now being revised or reinterpreted beyond recognition, Japan's role in promoting regional peace may have come to an end.
