The chapter goes through four aspects of the crisis in the South China Sea since 2009: Tension and militarisation, a divided ASEAN, two polarised legal standpoints, and Sino-US rivalry. In conclusion the chapter claims that China holds the key to ending the crisis by complying with international law and reassuring its neighbours through a "good neighbour policy."
