Ceasefires are essential tools within the conflict resolution toolbox, but the majority of ceasefires fail to include gender provisions or references to women and/or girls. In this policy brief, we present a new dataset which captures the gender provisions in ceasefires, based on 199 written ceasefire agreements between 1989 and 2018. We find that fewer than one in five ceasefires include a reference to gender. We take a closer look at these gender provisions and analyze the trends that emerge over time, across regions, and along thematic dimensions.
