The Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Index draws on recognized data sources to measure women’s inclusion, justice, and security in 177 countries and economies. The WPS Index distills country performance on 13 indicators and measures women’s status, ranging from education and employment to laws and organized violence. In this policy brief, we present headline findings from the 2023/24 WPS Index with a special focus on results and implications from our new indicator of political violence targeting women. Recurring incidents and cultures of political violence can deter women from political engagement and shrink civic spaces, especially for minority women or other historically excluded groups of women.
