Over the last three decades, humanitarian disarmament campaigns have led to landmark law and policy instruments designed to reduce human suffering, such as the 1997 Mine Ban Convention and the 2017 Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. But while campaigning by civil society organizations and like-minded states has made substantial progress, there are mounting concerns that the humanitarian disarmament agenda is losing momentum. In five policy briefs based on interviews and discussions with practitioners, we examine the challenges and opportunities facing the humanitarian disarmament community. In this fourth brief, we recommend three strategies for how governments and civil society organizations can revitalize these processes.
