Many international borders represent a challenge to peace and security in neighboring countries, as border areas often function as sanctuaries for armed groups and illegal trade with high-value resources. The border between Colombia and Venezuela is an important example of this, with the presence of armed groups on both sides of the border, widespread cross-border migration and access to profitable high-value resources. Despite the 2016 peace agreement between the FARC and the Colombian government, the level of violence in Colombia remains high. Local communities along the border experience several types of challenges related to this situation. How can the border challenges be better understood and handled to promote peace in the future?
