An individual’s personal journey of international labour migration can become an entire family’s pathway for upward social mobility. It may be an individual move to seek better opportunities, but it can also become a journey of hard work and sacrifice. Especially when the migrant strives to earn enough abroad to support the family back home. It also becomes more complex, as a family’s reliance on remittances and an enduring sense of contribution and responsibility can overwhelm the migrant as they also pursue personal goals.

This story focuses on a Filipino nurse in Germany who has worked abroad while providing for her family back home and the challenges that brings.

This comic was illustrated by Renren Galeno, while Karrie Fransman was the scriptwriter. It was produced by PositiveNegatives who also developed an animation. The animation and comic can be viewed in both English and Filipino. This research-based story draws on research from the 'Migration Rhythms in Upward Social Mobility in Asia' project at PRIO, where Marta Bivand Erdal and Karen Liao were the researchers mostly involved in the collaboration with PositiveNegatives.
