The Turkish military has often been defined as a "guardian army" responsible for protecting the Kemalist republic. Its political role has been weakened by the democratic reform process that started in 1999 following Turkey's acceptance as an EU candidate country. But recent revelations about the the "deep state" suggest that the military continues to operate in the shadows.
