When fighting for privacy and for freedom from governmental intervention, do we stand in danger of undervaluing the need for a lively ethical debate about the responsibility people have for their choices, even in the private sphere? This article takes as its point of departure the author's deep admiration for Georg Apenes' fight for liberal rights in general and the right to privacy in particular, while at the same time asking how that fight squares with the need for moral consciousness in a modern market society.
