The ending of the Cold War and of the enormously costly arms race has made the subject of a 'peace dividend' and conversion of military to civilian production an important cross-disciplinary research question. The recent changes offer great opportunities for conducting systematic research on the questions of disarmament and human welfare. Research on disarmament and conversion can aid greatly the policymaking processes, not just in terms of harvesting the peace dividend but also for realizing a stable, democratic, and peaceful global society. This book offers a more comprehensive guide to the literature than ever published before. In addition to important classics in the field, it includes a wide range of references to literature from the post-Cold War period. Apart from the detailed coverage of the English-language literature on disarmament and conversion, the book also covers the most important books and articles from the French, German, and Scandinavian literature, as well as literature in other major European languages. Over 2000 items are referenced. Insightful guides to the literature are provided in two essays: Michael Brzoska, Research Director at the Bonn International Center for Conversion, writes on conversion of the defence industry. Ron Smith, Professor of Economics at Birkbeck College, University of London, summarizes the main issues in the literature on defence expenditure and economic growth. Preface by Jayantha Dhanapala, Under-Secretary-General, Department of Disarmament Affairs, United Nations. This bibliography is a collaborative project between International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO), Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC) and Copenhagen Peace Research Institute (COPRI). A publication from COST A10 Defence Restructuring and Conversion
