With the close of the Cold War, the meaning of 'security' is no longer self-evident. What one defends depends on one's identity. Such identities are no longer fixed or solid. Tensions between various national identities and multifaceted, cosmopolitan, identities come to the fore. This book deals with 'Western' and 'European' security identities as they expressed in formal organizations like NATO and the EU in addition to informal communities of political decisionmakers and military officers.
