What can we learn from the most costly, ambitious and comprehensive international engagement in any ‘post-conflict’ situation since the Second World War? This paper looks at key elements of the difficult relationship between the US and Afghanistan over the past 13 years. Some of the findings could also be useful when other current and future conflicts are being addressed.
