A workshop on India’s Role in Global Nuclear Governance was co-organized by the Indian Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) and PRIO as a part the IDSA-PRIO cooperation on India in the World: Emerging Perspectives on Global Challenges, and its subproject on Nuclear Governance.
The workshop was held to discuss India's role in multilateral export control regimes, and in global nuclear governance in general. The aim was to explore the implications for global nuclear security and non-proliferation of Indian membership in the Missile Technology Control Regime, and potentially also the Wassenaar Arrangement, the Australia Group, and the Nuclear Suppliers Group. A broader theme of the workshop was the role of multilateral export control regimes in support of nuclear security and non-proliferation.
Key questions for discussion at the workshop:
- Can multilateral export control regimes play a more proactive role in addressing new threats and promoting nuclear security and non-proliferation?
- What is India's strategy for accommodation to the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and other export control regimes?
- Will India be accepted as a member of nuclear export control regimes?
- How does India view itself as a constructive actor in global nuclear governance?
