For a second year, PRIO AI Days took place earlier this month to explore the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in global peace and security.
Seven events were organized over two days bringing together experts, policymakers and thought leaders, to discuss the current and potential future impacts of AI on conflict prevention, peacebuilding and global security landscapes.
"AI is revolutionizing everything from diplomacy to warfare, and we need to understand the opportunities and risks it presents to global peace," said PRIO Director Henrik Urdal. "We organized PRIO’s AI Days to serve as a platform for dialogue and knowledge-sharing to help shape the responsible development and use of AI technologies in international affairs."
PRIO’s AI Days takes place at a critical time, as AI's impacts expands rapidly across fields such as international relations, humanitarian work and defense. With recent advancements in machine learning and autonomous systems, AI now plays an increasing role in everything from analyzing data for conflict prediction to automating military systems. However, the dual-use nature of AI, which can be used for both positive and harmful ends, remains a point of concern for many withing the peacebuilding community.
The events that took place ranges from ethical dimensions of AI in humanitarian contexts, to how authoritarian regimes exploit AI to consolidate power.
With AI continuing to reshape global systems at a rapid pace, PRIO’s AI Days marks an important step forward in the Institute’s commitment to examining how advanced technologies can both challenge and support global peace efforts.
