Transparency and Inclusivity in Peace Negotiations (TRIPEN) research project funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and conducted jointly by the European University Institute (EUI) and the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).
TRIPEN is focused on how Peace Facilitation Organisations (PFOs) impact mediation and peace diplomacy across the globe. “PFO” is a concept developed by this project and encompasses a cluster of non-governmental organisations. They have emerged since the end of the 1990s and are involved in mediation and facilitation in all stages of peace talks in many of the most violent and contracted conflicts in the world. Well-established PFOS include: CMI-Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation, Humanitarian Dialogue, Berghof Foundation, European Institute for Peace, Inter-mediate, Dialogue Advisory Group, Sant’Egidio and others). In “Inclusivity and transparency” the research team will address an urgent need to compare and analyse the modus operandi of PFOs in order to understand how they handle transparency issues, deal with inclusivity, engage with stakeholders and interact with other peace facilitators. For this purpose, the Project has three main workstreams:
- A general analysis of the PFOs and their practices to understand how they handle transparency and inclusivity. To identify their background, main characteristics, behaviour and future, a mapping and taxonomy of the different PFOs will be carried out due.
- A focus on how digitalisation impacts PFOs and their operations.
- A set of case studies on the European Union as a donor, and on the Horn of Africa as a region where the PFOs have played a significant role in several peace process.
Results from the project is made available through seminars, policy papers and academic publications.
