My current research focuses on Turkey's domestic and foreign policies with an emphasis on the Middle East. This includes Turkey's regional role, its geopolitical shifts and international humanitarian outreach. In the domestic arena, my research cover democratisation, Kurdish-Turkish relations, gender, and political Islam.
A related secondary theme using Turkey as a case is the role of rising powers in peacebuilding and humanitarianism.

Inthe new PRIO Paper ‘The Shifting Turkish Agenda inSyria’s Evolving Conflict: Understanding the Drivers of Turkey’s Policy in Syria’, Pinar Tank critically examines the Turkishagenda in Syria, identifying Turkey’s domestic drivers and situating thecountry’s policies within an ever-changing regional and international context.
PRIO researcher Pinar Tank’s 2019 paper, “Preserving Kurdish Autonomy”, was referenced in an article about the US protecting the Kurds of Syria and Iraq, by the online outlet Newspub.
PRIO Researcher Pinar Tank wrote an opinion piece on Turkey’s interests in Africa as a middle power, which was published in the Spanish newspaper, La Vanguardia’s magazine Vanguardia Dossier.
PRIO Researcher Pinar Tank was interviewed on the recent Turkish election, including by the news agency, NTB, with the interviews republished by multiple other outlets including TV2, Dagsavisen, ABC Nyheter, Radio Haugaland, Verified News Explorer Network, Nouvelles du Monde and News WWC. Pinar was also interviewed by TV2 on the election weekend (28.05 and 29.05) and the state broadcaster multiple times including, NRK radio, here (listen at 38 mins) and here (listen at 1:34), on NRK’s website, plus on the evening news show, Dagsnytt 18 TV/radio (watch at 51 mins). An interview with VG was also picked up by Extraavisen and Verified News Explorer Network. Pinar was also interviewed by the Brazilian national news outlet, O Globo.
PRIO Researcher Pinar Tank was interviewed extensively in Norwegian media about the elections in Turkey. This included by the newspaper Klassekampen here and here, Aftenposten, NRK Nyhetsmorgen radio (listen at 50 mins), and TV2 multiple times, the news wire agency NTB here and here, NRK net and radio (on Turkey and the Eurovision) and multiple other times on NRK, including on Dagsnytt 18 (watch at 12 mins 27 secs), Studio Plan (listen at 5:20) and the foreign affairs programme, Uriks. The Eurovision article was re-published in Italian and Spanish media and the NTB news articles were republished by several outlets, including Dagsavisen, Radio Haugaland and Document.
PRIO Researcher Pinar Tank’s opinion piece on Turkey’s president struggling to gather votes with young people and women ahead of the upcoming election, was published by the Norwegian newspaper, Aftenposten.
PRIO Researcher Pinar Tank was interviewed on the possible delay to Turkey’s national elections in May because of the earthquake, in the Norwegian newspaper, Klassekampen.
